international women's day

BLOG POST

This International Women's Day, we are taking a moment to celebrate the significant and incredible women within our communities. Three different women with their own unique background, all sharing moments in their lives that have shaped them as the leaders, mothers, daughters and friends they are today. Thank you to our own founder Pia, Kirsten King of FluidForm Pilates and Beth Levis of By Beth for being so open and honest with your personal story. Thank you for sharing what it means to be a woman, what you have learnt along the way, and what you hope for future generations to come.

Pia Whitesell

Founder of Macabalm and our own leading lady, Pia credits her mother and grandmother, as well as their entire community, for raising her with such strength and reverence for the natural beauty within ourselves, as well as mother nature. In combining her philosophy for less is more, Pia encourages and celebrates a life that is considered and of value. With a determination to challenge the status quo, Pia is inspired to be apart of an evolving industry, one that promotes more inclusivity and honours the stories of others as well as their relationship to beauty.

What opportunities have you been given from the women before you?

Both my mother and grandmother played such a pivotal role in raising me with such strength and reverence for the natural beauty within ourselves, as well as mother nature. This opportunity to see and appreciate the beauty in all, including the landscape that surrounds us, has without a doubt led me to who I am today, including starting my business.

If you had the opportunity to, how would you mentor another female? Personally and/or professionally.

I have mentored quite a few colleagues and friends, both in a personal and professional setting and one thing that has always remained consistent is to stand beside them and support, rather than lead. It’s vital that we as women, encourage and stand by each other to build our own self confidence. It is with this unwavering confidence and determination that I think we truly find our own success.

Is it possible to balance being a mother while being a professional? Have you had to make sacrifices along the way?

We all make sacrifices, big or little, when it comes to our family and professional life. It's an adjustment, and just like everything in life, you have to figure out how it works for you. Both being a mum, as well a professional who leads her own company, are incredibly important to me. Not everything can be perfect but I think you find your own way in managing it all. Maybe not all at once, but over time.

Why do we need more women in leadership roles? What strategies do you have for our fellow leaders?

To change and challenge the status quo. To push boundaries and forge a path for younger generations. With more women in leadership roles, we are able to create an environment that encourages and creates opportunities for greater diversity, experience and inclusivity.

How can we be a support system to the females and female business owners in our lives?

By giving time and listening to their story. So often we are silenced or overlooked but when given the opportunity to amplify our voice and share our why, share our narrative, change can occur.

Beth Levis

Beth Levis is a mother of four and founder of By Beth, a beauty brand redefining edible collagen. Created on her own terms and from foundations that she cares about, By Beth is built upon luxury, sustainability, simplicity, social responsibility, and advocacy - the result is a truly conscious collection that considers both body and the planet.

What makes IWD a special time to celebrate and reflect?

IWD gives us an opportunity to share our stories and find our voices in order to encourage change for the next generation. It also gives us an opportunity to celebrate how far we have come and our strategies for the future.

What opportunities have you been given from the women before you?

My greatest opportunity was no doubt being raised by a feminist mother who would not tolerate anything other than equality and respect for all. This I feel was the greatest gift and opportunity for me in terms of laying the groundwork on what I could foresee as my own personal future.

How important is it for women to support each other and what does that mean to you?

Supporting other woman is important to me for the success of our country but also as I want to role model such behaviour for my own three daughters. Modelling equality and support to women will hopefully set the bar high for my daughters. I hope that this is the very base for them to work with for I hope their future entails opportunities that I have not even dreamt of.

Is it possible to balance being a mother while being a professional? Have you had to make sacrifices along the way?

I love the idea of a perfectly finished house and kids going to school without vegemite on their faces, however the reality is it doesn’t really matter. Balance for me was found when I was able to let go of perfection. There is always sacrifices to be made but once I was able to see what was truly important to myself and my family then I was able to be at peace with my professional / personal work life balance.

Can you or do you break boundaries as a woman?

Personally I push boundaries beyond that which a lot of people are comfortable with today. If we don’t though, no changes will be made for the next generation. I have three daughters and to me, it is so incredibly important that I push now so that hopefully they won’t have to.

What makes IWD a special time to celebrate and reflect?

I have always been surrounded by strong and capable women, and I strive to teach my three girls strength and watch them grow into empowered young women. Women continue to face discrimination, inequality and unfair biases everyday. We have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. There are so many incredible women out there doing incredible things that I know will impact the lives of my girls and their children. Women deserve to be celebrated everyday, but International Women's Day is a great reminder of this.

How important is it for women to support each other and what does that mean to you?

From time to time we all deal with people who don't always have our backs. This is what makes a strong network of support so important. A small bit of encouragement and genuine support goes a long way in building someone's confidence, allowing them to grow and flourish. At Fluidform, we always encourage our members to workout with someone on a similar journey. Having people support you and hold you accountable is an incredible source of motivation and growth.

If you had the opportunity to, how would you mentor another female? Personally and/or professionally.

I am lucky enough to mentor many women. I am surrounded by females in my life from my girls, to my team of instructors and members of the Fluidform community. Having a global, online platform also means I am communicating with people around the world. My experience teaching grew from mentoring clients from everyday function to professional athletes, mother's and injury rehabilitation. This is why I created Fluidform at Home, to be able to help and support people, wherever they are in the world. As a mentor, it is important to me that everyone feels listened to and supported, I need them to know that Fluidform is a safe haven, a place they can always rely on, a place they always leave feeling the best version of themselves.

Is it possible to balance being a mother while being a professional? Have you had to make sacrifices along the way?

Life is a balancing act of so many things. Finding complete balance can be stressful, so I try to prioritise the important things, and focus on doing them well. Having a strong team who I can trust and rely on is also important when it comes to finding balance. I have sacrificed time with my family, but I am trying to get better at saying no and putting myself and my family first.

Can you or do you break boundaries as a woman?

I continue to challenge myself and the people around me. This is when the change happens and when we learn and grow. I never say no to something new because you can become bored if you only stick to what you know.

How can we be a support system to the females and female business owners in our lives?

Support other females in their endeavours – if you see someone doing good things, send them a message. As I said, a little bit of support can go a long way. Everybody experiences different failures and learnings that help you grow. Share your knowledge, be a teacher and help others grow with you.
